Longtime Journey keyboardist and songwriter Jonathan Cain has officially confirmed his plans to retire from the band following the conclusion of their "Final Frontier" farewell tour.
Cain, who joined the band in 1981 and co-wrote massive hits like "Don't Stop Believin'" and "Faithfully", opened up about his decision during an interview on the Rock & Roll High School podcast with Pete Ganbarg.
"We're Just Repeating Ourselves": Cain expressed that the band has reached a creative standstill, noting that their newer albums "don't seem to move the needle".
The "Grueling" Nature of the Tour: He described the 2026 farewell tour as an intense "grind". The band is performing 2-hour and 15-minute sets with no supporting act, making it a heavy physical tax—especially for lead singer Arnel Pineda.
At 76 years old, Cain plans to shift his creative energy toward ministry and contemporary Christian music. He noted that faith-based music allows him to express his melodic and spiritual self in a way that is deeply well-received by audiences.
